You have to advertise.

Your business cannot grow and flourish unless you advertise. Advertising is the “life-blood” of any profitable business. And regardless of where or how you advertise, it’s going to cost you in some form or another.

Every successful business is built upon and continues to thrive, primarily, on good advertising. The top companies in the world allocate millions of dollars annually to their advertising budget.

Of course, when starting from a garage, basement or kitchen table, you can’t quite match their advertising efforts—at least not in the beginning. But there is a way you can approximate their maneuvers without actually spending their kind of money. And that’s through “P.I” Advertising.

“P.I.” stands for per inquiry. This kind of advertising is most generally associated with broadcasting, where you pay only for the responses you get to your advertising message. It’s very popular–somewhat akin to bartering–and is used by many more advertisers than most people realize.

The advantages of P.I

Advertising is all in favor of the advertiser because, with this kind of advertising arrangement, you can pay only for the results the advertising produces.

To get in on this “free” advertising, start with a loose-leaf notebook, and about 100 sheets of filler paper. Next, either visit your public library and start poring through the Broadcast Yearbook on radio stations in the U.S., or Standard Rate and Data

Services Directory on Spot Radio. Both these publications will give you just about all the information you could ever want about licensed stations.

An easier way might be to call or visit one of your local radio stations and ask to borrow (and take home with you) their current copy of either of these volumes. To purchase them outright will cost $50 to $75.

Once you have a copy of either of these publications, select the state or states you want to work first. It’s generally best to begin in your own state and work outward from there. If you have a moneymaking manual, you might want to start first with those states reporting the most unemployment.

Use some old fashioned common sense.

Who are the people most likely to be interested in your offer, and where are the largest concentrations of these people?

You wouldn’t attempt to sell windshield de-ice canisters in Florida, or suntan lotion in Minnesota during the winter months, would you?

At any rate, once you’ve got your beginning “target” area decided upon, go through the radio listings for the cities and towns in that area, and jot down in your notebook the names of general managers, the station call letters, and addresses. be sure to list the telephone numbers as well.

On the first try, list only one radio station per city.

Pick out the station people most interested in your product would be listening to. This can be determined by the programming description contained within the data block about the station in the Broadcasting Yearbook or the SRDS Directory.

The first contact should be in the way of introducing yourself, and enquiring if they would consider a PI Advertising campaign.

You tell the station manager that you have a product you feel will sell very well in his market and would like to test it before going ahead with a paid advertising program.

You must quickly point out that your product sells for, say $5, and that during this test, you would allow him 50% of that for each response his station pulls for you.

Explain that you will handle everything for him: the writing of the commercials, all accounting, and bookkeeping, plus any refunds or complaints that come in. In other words, all he has to do is schedule your commercials on his log, and give them his “best shot.” When the responses come in, he counts them and forwards them on to you for fulfillment.

You make out a check for payment to him, and everybody is happy.

If you’ve contacted him by phone, and he agrees to look over your material, tell him to thank you and promise to get a complete “package” in the mail to him immediately. Then do just that.

Write a short cover letter, place it on top of your “ready-to-go” PI Advertising Package, and get it in the mail to him without delay.

If you’re turned down, and he is not interested in “taking on” any PI Advertising, just tell him thanks, make a notation in your notebook by his name, and go to your next call. Contacting these people by phone is by far the quickest, least expensive, and most productive method of “exploring” for those stations willing to consider your PI proposal.

In some cases though, circumstances will deem it to be less expensive to make this initial contact by letter or postcard.

In that case, simply address your card or letter to the person you are trying to contact. Your letter should be positive in tone, straight forward and complete.

Present all the details in logical order on one page, perfectly typed on letterhead paper, and sent in a letterhead envelope. (Rubber-stamped letterheads just won’t get past a first glance.)

Ideally, you should include a self-addressed and stamped postcard with spaces for positive or negative check marks in answer to your questions: Will you or won’t you over my material and consider a mutually profitable”Per Inquiry” advertising campaign on your station?

Once you have an agreement from your contact at the radio station that they will look over your materials and give serious consideration for a PI program, move quickly, getting your cover letter and package off by First Class mail, perhaps even Special Delivery

What this means is at the same time you organize your “radio station notebook,” you’ll also want to organize your advertising package.

Have it all put together and ready to mail just as soon as you have a positive response. Don’t allow time for that interest in your program to cool down.

You’ll need a follow-up letter. Write one to fit all situations; have 250 copies printed, and then when you’re ready to send out a package, all you’ll have to do is fill in the business salutation and sign it. If you spoke of different arrangements or a specific matter was discussed in your initial contact, however, type a different letter incorporating comments or answers to the points discussed.

This personal touch won’t take long, and could pay dividends!

You’ll also need at least two thirty-second commercials and two sixty-second commercials. You could write these up, and have 250 copies printed and organized as a part of your PI Advertising Package.

You should also have some sort of advertising contract written up, detailing everything about your program, and how everything is to be handled; how and when payment to the radio station is to be made, plus special paragraphs relative to refunds, complaints, and liabilities.

All this can be very quickly written up and printed in lots of 250 or more on carbonless multi-part snap-out business forms.

Finally, you should include a self-addressed and stamped postcard the radio station can use to let you know that they are going to use your PI Advertising program when they will start running your commercials on the air, and how often, during which time periods.

Again, you simply type out the wording in the form you want to use on these “reply postcards”, and have copies printed for your use in these mailings.

To review this program: Your first step is the initial contact after searching through the SRDS or Broadcasting Yearbook. Actual contact with the stations is by phone or mail.

When turned down, simply say thanks, and go to the next station on the list. For those who want to know more about your proposal, you immediately get a PI Advertising

Your Advertising Package should contain the following:

1. Cover letter

2. Sample brochure, product literature

3. Thirty-second and sixty-second commercials

Before you ask why you need an acknowledgment postcard when you have already given them a contact, remember that everything about business changes from day to day—conditions change, people get busy, and other things come up. the station manager may sign a contract with your advertising to begin on the 1st of March.

The contract is signed on the 1st of January, but when March 1 rolls around, he may have forgotten, been replaced, or even decided against running your program. A lot of paper seemingly “covering all the minute details” can be very impressive to many radio station managers, and convince them that your company is a good one to do business with.

Most Common E-Mail Problems And What To Do About Them

As we continue to evolve into the world of e-mail that is part of our everyday life, sometimes little problems arise that bother the user. Lost connections, can be aggravating, and supplied with solutions.

But there are a few more problems that can affect an e-mail user causing frustration and we will address these here, and again provide reasonable solutions to over come them.

Problem 1 – You Cannot Send a Message

Even when there is not a connection problem, you may attempt to send email, but find that it continues to remain in your outbox.

Solution

Typically this is a software problem, the result of otherwise unapparent damage or corruption to one or more e-mail messages. To address this problem, first copy any unsent messages as text.

Then save them on the computer’s hard drive or a back-up storage medium. After all messages have been saved, highlight all the messages in your outbox and click on “delete” or “clear”.

When clearing your outbox, start over.

Just copy unsent messages from the text files, pass them into new e-mail messages and resend.

Problem 2 – The E-mail is Missing an Attachment or the Attachment Won’t Open

An especially handy feature of e-mail is the ability to send and receive attachments. Transmitting documents, photos or other such information can save time and money compared to the U.S. Mail or express delivery services.

At the same time, attachments can be real headaches. A common frustration is to receive an e-mail message that refers to an attachment, but then find nothing is there.

Solutions

Often the best solution is to request that the sender try once again, since it is not unusual for the writer to refer to an attachment, but then forget to attach it.

Even if this is not the case, your request might prompt the sender to re-think the attachment’s format before transmitting again.

If the problem continues, consider asking the sender to paste the contents inside an e-mail message and try again. This may disrupt formatting, but can be an effective way to circumvent attachment problems.

If you see a message that the attachment has been deleted, it may be that your anti-virus software has detected a virus, and you’re better off without it anyway.

But if you find that all attachments are indiscriminately being deleted, check your mail properties. If a box is checked that blocks all attachments, remove the check mark so that you can receive attachments.

If you then receive a message from an unknown person, or if the message or attachment seems suspicious, delete the message without opening the attachment.

A related problem is to see that an attachment has been transmitted, but find that you are unable to open it. The causes (and thus the solutions) vary.

In some cases, the problem is that the software used by the sender does not match that of the recipient. As with a missing attachment, a simple fix is to ask the sender to copy and paste the contents of the attachment within a follow up mail message.

Even if formatting is disrupted, you can still get the gist of the information. You can also use your own copying and pasting process to reformat the contents, if that is important.

Another strategy is to save the document to your hard drive, and then open the software program that was used initially to create it.

Once this program is in use, your computer may be able to recognize what had been the attachment, and open it.

If you do not have the appropriate software loaded on your computer, you may be able to download it from the Internet; just follow the on screen prompts to proceed.

Problem 3 – You Have too Much Incoming Mail or Cannot Download What You Have

If you are receiving large volumes of e-mail, you may be vulnerable to several difficulties.

Solutions

Many Internet service providers place limits on the amount of storage provided to each user (although some have recently increased storage limits). If a pre-set limit is reached (perhaps because you’ve gone too long without downloading your e-mail, or have been inundated by SPAM or virus induced flood of messages), additional messages will be bounced back to those who sent them.

Of course the direct approach is to download your mail and then weed it out, but a smarter move may be to access your e-mail account via Web mail. That way you can see a listing of all messages and quickly delete any that do not appear to be of interest.

The end result is the same, but this step can save a great deal of downloading time if you’re using a dial up modem. It also adds an extra measure of virus protection even if you have a broadband connection.

Since you’re deleting messages from your ISP’s server before they ever have a chance to infect your computer, it’s like killing mosquitoes🦟 before they bite you – instead of afterwards.

If you do not have a Web mail account, it’s easy to get one. Simply go to a provider such as Yahoo (www.yahoo.com) or Lycos (www.lycos.com) and register.

You can also use a site such as mail2web (www.mail2web.com) or webmail4free.com without even registering.

Go to the site and enter you e-mail address and password. You will see a listing of all incoming mail, which you can read and then retain for downloading, or delete, as you choose.

A similar challenge may be caused by unusually large message. Again, this problem is more common with dial-up modems, where hefty messages may take an annoyingly long time to download.

In worst cases, you may find yourself unable to receive other messages, because the connection with the server where your messages are stored is severed when a time limit has been reached.

Use of Web mail can also do the trick here. Just log on to the third-party site, peruse the list of messages in your inbox, and choose the one that is the largest (most Web mail programs automatically list the size of each message). If the message seems of potential interest, open and read it, and then delete it.

Or if it is obviously spam or something in which you have no interest, you can delete the message without even bothering to read it. Once you have removed the offending message, your other incoming mail will no longer be blocked.

If you do not have Web mail, an option is to contact your Internet Service Provider and ask for help. Once a customer service representative deletes the offending message from the ISP’s server, you can then download all remaining messages.

Also keep in mind that retaining too much e-mail can be an organizational problem, if not a technical one. Take time to delete e-mail that does not need to be saved for future reference.

Allowing too many messages to accumulate wastes storage space and makes it more difficult to find important messages when you need to refer to them. For messages that merit retention, create a series of folders so that they can be easily located, and so that your inbox will not become too full.

Here are three powerful tips for getting into the right business or profession for you:

Tip #1 – Take a close look at what you don’t like to do.

Although I don’t generally recommend looking at anything from a negative perspective, there are times when it’s helpful and this is one of them.

One of the easiest and fastest ways to narrow your search for the right business or profession for you to get into is to figure out what the wrong business or profession for you to get into would be.

For example…

If the very thought of selling something to someone makes you want to…

Well…

Let’s just say…

Throw up…

Then I’d suggest you don’t consider any business or profession that involves sales or at least direct sales.

I can tell you from personal experience…

If you get into a business or profession that you don’t like, you’ll be miserable in the process and ultimately you’ll fail.

So…

Why set yourself up for misery and failure ahead of time?

Tip #2 – Take a close look at what you do like to do.

It might be something you’re doing now or have done in the past to earn money. It might be a hobby or special interest of yours. It could even be related to a class you took in school or a particular subject you’re interested in…

Anything…

Absolutely anything!

Remember this…

You can get rich in any business or profession.

There are folks right now, right this very moment, who are getting rich in every conceivable business and profession…

And so can you!

There’s a way or ways you can get rich doing absolutely anything you like to do.

Here’s a great example…

I know a gal who earns a serious full-time income doing exactly what she likes doing better than anything else…

Going to tag sales (also known as garage sales or yard sales depending on where you live) and buying “stuff”.

Although she makes less money per item doing it this way, she makes far more money in the long run because it allows her to massively do the one thing she likes to do better than anything else…

There’s a way or ways you can get rich doing absolutely anything you like to do.

Tip #3 – Take a close look at your strengths and weaknesses.

The ideal business or profession for you to get into would be one that you like doing and one that makes use of your strongest abilities, skills, or talents.

However…

Although you should consider them, your abilities, skills, or talents shouldn’t be your first consideration when choosing a business or profession for you to get into.

Why?

Two reasons…

First…

There may be all sorts of things you’re good at that you don’t really like doing all that much.

Second…

There isn’t any ability, skill, or talent that you can’t develop if you want to.
